Top 10 Smartest Dog Breeds

Top 10 Smartest Dog Breeds
Guess what? My dog is the smartest dog in the world, and has IQ greater than mine. And you also feel the same about your pet, don't you?

Yes, this is true that every proud dog owner deem their dog as smartest dog in the whole world. Your dog never barks at you; but bites every other single piece of human in your town doesn't mean he is intelligent. Also, if your dog gives damn about what you teach doesn't make him duffer, either.

In fact, there is a method called Canine IQ test , where, their intelligence is measured from the records in dog schools and has been evaluated according to how they respond to a certain task assigned to them.

There are three types of dog intelligence:
1. Adaptive Intelligence (learning and problem-solving ability). This is specific to the individual animal and is measured by canine IQ tests.
2. Instinctive Intelligence. This is specific to the individual animal and is measured by canine IQ tests.
3. Working/Obedience Intelligence. This is breed dependent.

Today, I have choosen to write about top ten smartest breed in the world. But let me remind you this is not the ultimate truth.Morover, professional dog obedience judges created this ranking, not me or you.

10. Australian Cattle Dog
The Australian Cattle Dog has a great stamina and endurance. They are a picture of strength and agility, with intense watchful eyes. They belong to the pastoral group and are used for cattle-herding as a companion and seen in the show-ring. The Australian Cattle Dog is known as the Australian Heeler, Hall's Heeler, Queensland Heeler and the Blue Heeler.

Yes, the Australian Cattle Dog from Down Under. A working dog that is traditionally occupied with controlling and herding cattle, its qualities are exceptional intelligence, alertness, resourcefulness, and a fiercely protective loyalty over its property and people. They are agile, strong, active dogs, both physically and mentally, which revel in new experiences. The flip side is that they bore easily and will unintentionally find trouble while looking for activities to occupy themselves with. The Cattle Dog is very organized; many are known for putting their own toys away after playing.

9. Rotweiler
The Rottweilers are medium to large, compact dogs known for their solid black, flat-lying coats with clearly defined rust-colored markings. Although they have double coats, the under coat is very fine and not visible through the outer one which is coarse and of medium length. They belong to the working group and are used as guard dogs, watch dogs, police dogs, and seen in the show-ring.
Another herding dog, the Rottweiler began in Germany as a true work companion. They are still primarily used for work as guard dogs and as police dogs. They are well known for their stoicism, keen perception, courage, and unflagging loyalty. They make an excellent addition to the family.

8. Papillon
The Papillon is a dainty, well balanced little dog who always has an alert and intelligent expression. They belong to a toy group. They were originally bred as companions and today are used for companions and seen in the show ring, agility, obedience, as hearing dogs for the deaf, visiting hospitals and homes.

This deceptively cute, butterfly-eared dog is smarter, tougher, and stronger than it appears (it's like the bionic dog). Often described as big dogs in little bodies, they have the athletic stamina to keep up on long walks, and the bravura of a canine ten times its size. The Papillon is a true companion and watchdog. Although they can be ferociously protective over what belongs to them, their keen intelligence makes it possible to take them anywhere. Let's not forget they can be litter trained, a big plus.

7. Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the United States and belongs to the gundog group. This breed is definitely in the top three when it comes to choosing a family pet because they are very friendly, intelligent, energetic and good natured, making them excellent companions and working dogs.

The Lab, as it is affectionately called, is the most popular breed chosen by families. Another member of the working class of dogs, the Lab is best known for its intelligence, affection, patience, and gentility, making them perfect companions for households with kids. They are easily trained, and, in fact, are one of the top dogs chosen for search and rescue, assisting the disabled, and police work. They are also known to self train, observing behaviors in humans and repeating them -- a great asset in emergency situations.
6. Shetland Sheepdog
The Shetland Sheepdog is a strong, lively, lightly built, beautiful dog, with a long, wedge-shaped head. Its coat is rough with a soft undercoat. This breed has a resemblance in size and general appearance to the Rough Collie as the Shetland pony does to some of the larger breeds of horses.

5. Doberman PinscherThe Doberman Pinscher is a moderately large, powerful, yet still elegant dog. It has a coat that is smooth, short and come in various colors with tan markings. They are extremely intelligent, with active minds and bodies.
4. Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is a beautiful, strong, well-proportioned dog with a feathered, medium-length, cream to golden-colored coat. It is very popular Gundog breed and is employed today for its compatibility in companionship, showmanship, obedience and field trials.
A very affectionate and popular breed, the Golden Retriever is highly regarded for its intelligence. They can learn well over 200 commands, making them indispensable companions, both in the home and in the workplace. Loyal, loving, and patient, with a willingness to please and a love of learning, this is a fabulous companion pet to bring into your family.

3. German Shepherd
This is my favorite breed of all. The German Shepherd Dog or Alsatian is a kind of dog breed and belongs to a herding group. They are very intelligent, alert, and well-suited to active working environments.

The Shepherd was originally bred specifically for intelligence. Smart, courageous, and protective, the Shepherd is one of the most dependable of companions. They learn tasks after only a few repetitions, and obey first commands nearly always the first time it is given. They are eager to learn new tasks, as this gives them direction and purpose -- very important for a Shepherd. Besides being used for herding animals, they are often used as guard dogs, police dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and have even been trained by the military for parachute jumps.

2. Poodle
The Poodle is a noble, elegant and well balanced dog with a slender muzzle and long neck. They belong to the utility dog group and are now used as companions and performance dogs. They are spectacular show dogs.

Easily trainable, steadfast, and sharp-minded, Poodles flourish in human company. Even with the frou-frou hairdos, Poodles are sometimes made to endure and can be quite effective as guard dogs, especially the standard sized Poodles. In fact, the "poodle clip," was created specifically for the working Poodle, so that it could swim more effectively, while still having fur to protect its organs as it went about the business of hunting and retrieving. The Poodle excels at training and obedience, and also loves creative play time. This is what made them so popular as circus performers. But, this can be a drawback as well. If left alone to boredom, Poodles can be creative about finding ways to amuse themselves, sometimes finding trouble along the way.

1. Border Collie
The Border Collie tops the list.It is a medium sized bundle of energy, looking rather like a lightly built Australian Shepherd without a bob-tail. They belong to the pastoral group and are the classic farm dog.

Because of their extraordinary intelligence and high energy, it is essential to give Border Collies an occupation or purpose, or you may well find your home wrecked upon your return from a long day at work. They have an intense connection with humans, making them ideal work and home companions. However, keep this in mind: Border Collies invariably will not do well unless they are with people who are as high energy as they are; they do best with humans who can participate in dog sports with them. Also, because of their background as herding dogs, they may be frustrated by small children, as their inability to herd the children as they deem fit is confounded. For the right human, the Border Collie is well behaved, exceptionally good at learning, and a true-blue companion.

Last but not the least, you can't judge intelligence or dumbness by whether your dog follows your commands or not. I am never fond of IQ test, it's like making Michael Jackson lecture on Quantum Physics while Albert Einstein dance on a stage, and so called judge noticing their act. You can't judge intelligence of man by having or missing some virtue, and same applies for dogs. It's all about emotion, love and feelings between you and your dog, not some stupid theory devised by some big-shot professors just to amuse themselves.

The CBS "Early Show" ran a story about dogs and their intelligence, or lack thereof. In the story, they shared their list of the top 10 smartest and top 10 dumbest dog breeds.

One of the more surprising things according to book named "The Intelligence of Dogs" by Dr. Stanley Coren is that, depending upon your life style, it may be more difficult to live with a more intelligent, rather than a less intelligent dog. (Dr Coren is Professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia.)

I feel my dog is the Smartest-dumbest dog in the whole world, and what do you think  about your dog??

Thanks to :1.Alexandra for encouragement :-)

I'm glad you did a post about dogs Sandy :-)

The one breed that actually surprised me on the list was Poodles. But when I read why, it made sense.

My dog Lisen, well what I do know is that she is an expert of manipulating me, LOL!

All in all I think dogs are better at understanding us humans, than we are at understanding them.

Great post!

I thought this breed only care about being obedience and cute only.
I thought Labrador would be higher in rank than Poodle :))
My late dogs were all smart, had high IQ score, and special. But my latest late dog, -with all due respect to my other late dogs- he was an Einstein in dog's world :)
